Professional Book Editing Services for Writers

Whether you’re brainstorming a book idea, getting ready to submit to agents and editors, or polishing a manuscript before self-publishing, you’ve come to the right place.

  • If you have a story concept you’d like to talk through, need help getting unstuck on a plot point, or have questions about the publishing industry, this service is perfect for you. Come armed with questions galore and send up to 2,500 words of material in advance if you’d like, and I will provide verbal feedback via phone, Zoom, or Google Meet based on my experience on both the publisher and agenting sides of the industry.

An hour-long call is available for an additional fee, with verbal feedback on up to 5,000 words. If you’re interested in adding more material or scheduling a longer call, please feel free to get in touch.

  • The most bird’s-eye-level edit I offer, in which I condense my editorial feedback into a 10–15 page document you can refer to while revising. In the document, I outline recurring, big-picture craft elements that could use additional attention, suggest ways to more effectively address these issues, and offer sample writing exercises for you to keep improving your skills. I focus on craft elements like structure, narrative arc, pacing, themes, overall dialogue, characterization and character development, voice, tone, and more.

This service is ideal for authors who sense the presence of overarching challenges in their completed manuscripts, as well as authors who are working on early drafts and would like to resolve potential issues early.

  • The most comprehensive, in-depth edit I offer, in which I use Track Changes throughout your manuscript to provide specific notes and suggestions regarding plot, narrative arc, structure, flow, dialogue, character development, clarity, voice, themes, conflict and tension, any overarching and recurring grammatical issues, and other relevant elements of craft. This stage of editing may involve restructuring chapters, moving around paragraphs, and noting places where you can either expand or contract craft elements and how to go about doing so.

The developmental edit also includes an editorial letter in which I summarize my observations and offer you a direction in which you can take your edits.

  • A meticulous and detailed line-level edit of the completed manuscript, in which I prioritize preserving your voice while simultaneously tightening language; editing for grammar, spelling, punctuation, style, and usage; noting inconsistencies and repetition; styling footnotes and endnotes (if applicable); and querying you about any substantive suggested changes.

I include a style sheet with the copyedit as a way of guiding consistency and accuracy across the manuscript, as well as explaining my editorial decisions and reasoning.

  • Authenticity reading, or sensitivity reading, refers to editing with the goal of reducing and potentially eliminating inadvertent stereotypes, bias, and inaccurate representation of different identities in books. Far from censoring or shaming you, my role as an authenticity reader is to guide you toward accurate, thoughtful representation of different identities and experiences in your book.

In this edit, I leave comments throughout your manuscript and write a detailed assessment of how issues of identity and identity-related experiences are portrayed, which can include suggestions and resources for improvement. To learn more about the identities and experiences I read for, please get in touch with your manuscript concerns.

  • The final review of an already-copyedited manuscript, which involves correcting any remaining or newly introduced errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, design, and typesetting.

As this is the last editorial step in preparing a manuscript for publication and requires the text to be finalized, I recommend this service to authors who are self-publishing.

  • Drawing upon my insight as a literary agent, I will read your query letter and provide you with detailed notes on your hook, elevator pitch, structure, voice, comp titles, content, and more, with an eye for what will make your query stand out in an agent’s inbox.

  • Readers often get invested in a story because of its characters, whether they love them or hate them. Well-rounded characters are complex, dynamic, and believable, popping off the page even in the most fantastical circumstances.

In this edit, I will read your manuscript with a focus on characterization and character arcs and then provide you with a detailed review of how you might strengthen both. When we’ve finished working together, you should feel much more familiar with who your characters are and how you can make them as vivid as possible.

  • Interested in more than one editorial service, a partial edit, or a hybrid of the two? I’m happy to offer flexible, custom editorial packages based on your needs.

Discounted package rates apply if you group together more than one full editorial service (such as a developmental edit and copyedit, copyedit and query letter review, etc.).
